Recompiling extra, and kernel problems…
Last night, I decided to recompile community, AUR, and unstable. It all seemed to go very well until I rebuilt my initramfs image to test my new splashy theme (splashy was one of the recompiled packages). I rebooted my computer and… Nothing. GRUB appeared, tried to load the kernel, and the screen went black. I knew it was bad because before splashy starts "Loading Initramfs…" appears on the screen - and it didn’t.
As you can imagine, I was a little stuck for what to do. I found a Xubuntu LiveCD and booted up with that and started using my computer as normally as I could do. Then I realized. I had made a backup of /boot before rebuilding the initramfs image just in case! I mounted the appropriate partitions, and copied the files over. I rebooted and Arch worked!
I then discovered that /boot had somehow become unmounted while rebuilding the initramfs, and so the correct kernel images were in completely the wrong location. I deleted them, and rebuilt them in the correct location - and rebooted to be sure. Everything worked. So, to everyone who asks me "Is a LiveCD worth it?" I’m now going to say "Yes, one saved my computer."
Anyway, back to compiling I went! I started compiling core but noticed that the Bash source was downloading at 400B/s. It is a 2.something MB file, and was going to take hours to download! I thought "bugger that!" and cancelled the build. I then began recompiling extra - and that has been going along nicely for the past three hours or so. I’m currently on package 29 out of 356. It will take a little while to finish.
I can’t wait to reboot and see the speed difference, as quite a lot of important things are located in extra. I’m putting off recompile core for now, as Bash was being very slow. I may also recompile testing before I reboot - as my kernel is in there.

Of course LiveCDs are worth their weight in gold. Without them, I would have never attempted linux 2 years ago!
