Ubuntu, Bleeding-Edge.
I’m sure we all know here that Ubuntu is a Linux distribution based on Debian Sarge. It is known for stability (thanks to the Debian base), and its user-friendliness. Ubuntu is a very fast growing distro, and some have estimated that is it the most widely used distro. It is released in six-month cycles, and adopts a version numbering scheme based on the date of release (ie: 8.04 is 2008/04). The version naming scheme seems to be going in alphabetic order, at least for now, and consists of two alliterating words, an adjective and an animal (ie: Hardy Heron).
Ubuntu is very easy to use and it just works with everything I have thrown an it. I have never had a problem with Ubuntu and it will always have a place in my heart as the distro that attracted me to Linux in the first place. However, I have read that the Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex’s (terrible name, I know) repositories have opened. Now, as I am a fan of rolling-release and Ubuntu, I have decided to devote 25GB to this pseudorolling-release setup. I’ll be installing a command line Hardy Heron and building it up from scratch, and then changing the repo’s to Intrepid and updating everything that has updates.
I expect this to be a fun and problem-filled excursion, as I have never used pre-pre-pre-alpha Ubuntu stuff before, and I’ll love every minute of it! I’ll probably go with Fluxbox and iDesk for my GUI, as I like both of them, and I’ll make a custom “Rolling Ubuntu” wallpaper. Fun times ahead, I just have to wait for the ISO of Hardy to finish downloading.
