Switched from Bash to Zsh

I wanted to try something new, and what better than a new shell? My usage of shells has been severely limited to Bash, Dash, and (on FreeBSD) Bourne. I decided to give Zsh a try because many people seem to like it. So far I have noticed three differences:

Tab completion doesn’t work in the current [...]

Project Euler

For those that don’t know, Project Euler is a series of mathematical programming challanges, designed to test you. A good knowledge of maths isn’t necessary - unless you want your solutions to be elegant and efficient.
I have only just started, so far I’ve only done Problem 1, but I intend to see how far I [...]

Switched from Qalculate to…

…IDLE! I needed to calculate the number of bytes in five gigabytes, and Qalculate gave me the answer in standard notation. I could probably have changed that, but it was faster to open up IDLE and type
1024**3 * 5
The next thing I did was remove Qalculate, and I shall be using IDLE for all my [...]

Archlinux.co.uk

This site is an idea me and a friend came up with after seeing the archlinux.us email address thread. Here’s the introduction/welcome post from the blog:
Welcome to Archlinux.co.uk! This site is co-founded by me and a friend, and aims to provide a useful service to UK (and beyond) Archers. The site may be very small [...]

Design Overhaul

I’ve done a bit of an overhaul on the design, and you may need to install the following fonts to make it look right:

DejaVu Sans
Terminus
AvantGarde LT Medium
Liberation Sans

Of course, you have no excuse for not having such wonderful fonts installed in the first place! If you don’t and won’t install those fonts, it should look [...]

Sick of “Core Dump”?

If you’re an Archer, you will have noticed that the text “Core Dump” is displayed upon booting. That’s because the initscripts haven’t been updated since Core Dump came out, and the devs are planning to completely remove that message! I oppose that, I like having a little message displayed when booting. arew264 on the Arch [...]

Games I Play

I play a number of games on my Arch laptop, and am addicted to all of them! If I try to quit first I get hot and cold flushes then the shakes, the horrible, horrible shakes… Anyway, read on at your own risk. In the interests of mental stability, I urge you to skip the [...]

Frozen Bubble

Curse you, Linux gods! I got hopelessly addicted to Frozen Bubble! I finally decided to try it today after seeing people write good things about it on the Internet for a while, that was a mistake. It is the most fun and addicting game ever created. I shall show you a screenshot for those who [...]

Switched to Jabber

I have just started transitioning from MSN/WLM to Jabber. I don’t expect I’ll ever completely transition, as many of my contacts use only MSN/WLM and few have heard of Jabber. Oh well, some of my contacts will be through Jabber, and I’ll mention Jabber to all new contacts I add just in case. Anyway, no [...]

Flash 10 Beta on Arch x86_64 How To

If you’re using Opera on Arch x86_64 you’ve probably got the flashplayer-opera64 package from the AUR installed. That package is for Flash 9, and I prefer Flash 10, so I set about editing the PKGBUILD, copying from the flashplugin-beta PKGBUILD. Here is what you do.
Dependencies
Opera has a 32bit plugin wrapper, so nsplugin is not needed, [...]
